UAE businesses invest heavily in customer service training. Hotels, restaurants, retailers and service companies run workshops every year. And most of the effect is gone within weeks.
The trainer usually isn't the problem. The problem is what happens when the trained employee goes back to work.
Five reasons training fades
- The process didn't change. People learn a better way, then go back to a system that makes it impossible.
- Scripts replace judgment. Scripts help with consistency, but customers notice when an agent can't step off the page.
- It's a one-day event. Without follow-up, new habits don't form.
- Team leads aren't part of it. If the direct manager can't coach the new behaviour, it disappears.
- Success is measured by attendance. "120 staff trained" says nothing about what customers experience.
What training that sticks looks like
Tie it to one process. Pick one journey or one recurring complaint. Fix the process and train on the fixed version at the same time.
Train team leads first. They need to know what good looks like and how to coach it on real calls or real guest interactions.
Coach weekly for six weeks. Short sessions on actual recordings or observed interactions do more than another workshop.
Measure what customers notice. Track complaints, repeat contacts or guest feedback on the trained area before and after.
Service recovery: give authority, not just scripts
Every service recovery session says "empower your frontline." Then staff need a manager's approval for a small gesture.
Real empowerment is written down: what an employee can offer, up to what value, without asking anyone. Write it, train it and back it. A small gesture costs far less than a customer who leaves angry and tells others why.
Questions to ask any training provider
- What process or behaviour will change, and how will we see it?
- How are team leads involved after the session?
- What follow-up coaching is included?
- How will results be measured beyond attendance and feedback forms?
